The Difference Between Hydration and Moisture

Dehydrated skin lacks water; dry skin lacks oil. We explain how to tell the difference and which ingredients to look for in each case.

Hydration refers to water content in the skin. When skin is dehydrated it can feel tight, look dull, and show fine lines that disappear after a good moisturiser. Humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and urea draw water into the skin.

Moisture refers to oil content and the lipid barrier that keeps water from escaping. Dry skin produces less sebum and may feel rough, flaky, or itchy. Occlusive ingredients like ceramides, squalane, and plant oils help lock moisture in.

Many people are both dehydrated and dry. In that case, layer a hydrating serum under a richer moisturiser to restore both water and oil balance.
