How to Calm Redness and Strengthen Your Skin Barrier

A compromised barrier shows up as redness, sensitivity, and flaking. Learn the calming ingredients and habits that restore balance.

The skin barrier is your outermost defence. When it's healthy, skin retains moisture and keeps irritants out. When it's compromised, you may notice redness, stinging, dryness, or breakouts.

To repair it, strip your routine back to basics: a gentle cleanser, a ceramide-rich moisturiser, and sunscreen. Avoid fragrance, alcohol, and strong actives like high-strength retinoids or acids until the barrier recovers.

Ingredients like niacinamide, panthenol, centella asiatica, and colloidal oatmeal are excellent for calming inflammation and supporting barrier repair. Be patient — restoring the barrier typically takes several weeks.
